Paula Markert
Born 1982 in Hamburg, lives and works in Hamburg, Germany.
Hamburg native Paula Markert studied Communication Design at the HAW Hamburg and at the University of Barcelona. She works as a freelance photographer for publications such as “Die ZEIT”, “Aktion Mensch Magazin” and “Stern”. She puts out different artistic projects on a regular basis. Her dissertation “Die Verhältnisse”, which deals with the emotional level of varying family constellations, received the BFF advancement award, as well as the award for documentary photography from the Wüstenrot foundation. Her works are shown at numerous collective- and solo exhibitions.
In the involvement with socially relevant, often psychological topics, Paula Markert teases the contradictory relationship between photography and reality. The artist utilizes the medium of photography to examine humankind with the emotional realities of life and the social structures of its surroundings. Paula Markert often implements her documentary approach by staging her photographs. Even though they are staged, her works are always based on her observations of real life. By interfering with what is happening, the photographer makes inner processes palpable and opens a projection surface for the interpretation of the viewer.
